Halloween is fast approaching and safety comes to mind with all the young trick-or-treaters roaming the streets at dusk. Here are some pointers for home owners to help insure the safety of others as they approach your door for their treats.

Clear your yard of things that could trip up ghostly visitors. Remove and store away ladders, water hoses, flowerpots, rakes, and dog chains/leashes.

If you carve out jack-o-lanterns and plan to use lit candles, be sure to place the pumpkin well away from the stairs and walkways. Trick or treaters could inadvertently bump into the pumpkin and catch their costume on fire.

Make sure that any paper or cloth decorations that you hang outside are not near any lit candles. Even a gentle breeze could blow the end of your decoration into the lit flame.

Keep pets indoors for the evening, especially cats. If your dog needs to go out, make sure you go outside with him or her. Pets get frightened easily on Halloween with all the strange looking visitors coming to their door and you don’t want your pet to accidentally bite someone.

Light your doorway area and steps. It is easy for youngsters to trip and fall when wearing long costumes and masks that may obstruct their view. If your entrance requires people to walk up and down a long or steep flight of steps, be sure to provide lighting here as well.

Most adults usually go over safety tips with the little ones before they head out for their special night of fun, but can neglect checking for possible hazards in their own yard. Take the time this year to look around and remove obstructions and items that could cause injury to others. Then we can all have a safe and fun-filled Halloween this year!

Halloween is one of the most thrilling holidays of the year for many children as well as fun-loving adults. One of the most ultimate joys for young and old is decorating your home for Halloween. You can do it easily, by allowing your imagination lead the way and a good deal can be created within a tight budget, if needed. Pay close attention on how to decorate for the ultimate Halloween.

When you have children, you can use all those class Halloween projects. You can simply hang them about or even make a Halloween tree, similar to a Christmas or Easter tree. You can use construction paper for making jack-o-lanterns, bats, cats, witches, spiders and other ghoulish decorations to place around the house. Once they have created their paper decorations, use tape and sting to attach them for hanging.

Spooky sounds are wonderful for setting the mood. You might want to purchase a Halloween CD or make your own, using a tape recorder.

Lighting is essential for setting a Halloween atmosphere. You can use candles and jack-o-lanterns, however, do be sure to practice fire safety. You can use some of those plastic Christmas candles, either using the orange bulbs, or other colored lights, you can always cover the bottom with construction paper, aluminum foil or paint them. Black lights strategically placed adds an eerie feeling.

Making a Halloween dummy is simple and fun, by using some old clothes, boots a hat and some stuffing. Pose the dummy inside or out for the trick or treating children to see, they love taking a close up peek at such Halloween decorations. You might also consider some spider webs and spiders to hang out at your home as well during Halloween.

When decorating your yard for Halloween, you might want to consider allowing the grass to grow which will add to the appearance of the house being abandoned, then gather up some old looking wooden planks write some scary names upon them and then place them around the yard as grave markers. While preparing the graves, you might like to place a bit of dirt there as well to give it more of an appearance of being a grave, some people may consider using fertilizer to do this, however, fertilizer will actually burn the grass beneath it when there it is more than the grass actually needs.

Another interesting idea, if you have enough yard space, is to plant a corn maze, when the time is right, and then allow the corn to stand in place during Halloween, when the corn should already have begun to dry out, which provides a very scary appearance, not to mention that the rustling of the dried cornstalks when the wind blows adds that extra creepy sounds while traveling through a corn maze. If you decide to plant a corn maze to use during Halloween, you might consider also planting some well placed costumed individuals to hide within the maze, to scare some of the people traveling through the maze. However, you may want to try to be too scary when entertaining children and older people, so as not to upset anyone to badly.

Another great idea for decorating your yard for a Halloween party is to set up a bonfire and perhaps an effigy or two. Imagine tossing Freddie Kruger into the fire, or perhaps Jason or Michael. It’s all in fun and it is the season! Have a blast getting ready for your Ultimate Halloween.

With fall just around the corner, we’ve been talking about fall home decorating ideas such as our post on porch decorating ideas for fall. So when you think about fall, what kind of ideas do you have? What images come to mind? Many people think about the changing of the colors of the leaves or when the leaves begin to fall off the trees. Some people in warm climates may think of an appreciated drop in temperature or finally being able to wear long sleeves again.

Some people think about Halloween and Thanksgiving dinners with the family or fall football season. Whatever fall makes you think of, you can bring those feelings back again and again when you decorate your home for fall.

Here are some fall home decorating ideas you can try in your own home:

* Use deeper colors, earth tones and soft browns to set the tone in your home.
* Move your furniture into small groups for more coziness.
* Add pillows of varying sizes to your furniture and throughout the house.
* Create handmade wreaths and garland (or buy some) to decorate your home.
* Change your window decorations from spring/summer to something more suitable for the new season.
* Plants really set the mood for fall and you can try silk flowers in fall colors as well.
* Decorating with gourds is wonderful this time of year (search for our gourd posts for ideas).

These are just a few fall decorating ideas to get you started. The most important thing to remember is that your fall home decorating should make you feel good. Your home should be a place of comfort and relaxation from the rest of the world. It is also a place you want to bring friends and family to and to enjoy time together. Fall is one of the biggest times of year for people to visit with one another so make your home a great place to be this year.

Although some of us are still experiencing 90 degree weather, this is a great time of year to begin to play your fall home decorations. If you have children like we do in the Giverny family, you will undoubtedly be hanging Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations for each holiday but you can carry you basic fall theme through the entire season as well.

Follow these few tips to create a great fall look for you home that will carry you for the entire season.

Use items from nature such as rocks, leaves, and pumpkins to decorate your home both inside and out.

Let kids participate in the fall decorating by painting a pumpkin for their room. With the help of an adult, kids can paint a wacky pumpkin face or, for the little ones, glue on foam cut-outs to bring their pumpkin to life.

Take a nature walk through the woods and pick up rocks, pine cones and colorful leaves for a quick wreath or great table display. Observe your natural setting for great inspiration.

Scented pine cones make a welcoming atmosphere for visitors when placed in cute baskets on the porch or foyer table.

Use tumble or rough stones in the bottom of a vase of flowers or in a bowl for a rustic accessory.

Use high-quality dried and artificial flowers so that your beautiful decoration last for years to come.

Match your floral décor to your climate. For example, if you live in a harsh climate artificial decorations will last the longest and look the best. If you are living in a moderate climate, dried, preserved or artificial flowers will look stunning.

When holiday arrive, simple add your ghosts, goblins and cornucopias to your beautiful fall decorations.

Yes, you can enjoy your outdoor patio!

In spring and summer and also to some extent in winter, you can enjoy the outdoor patio.

All you need is some patio space and the most comfortable patio seats.

These seats can be patio wooden chairs and benches, wicker chairs, glider chairs and vintage metal chairs. Professionals say you can select from 5 main medium: aluminum (including cast aluminum), iron, wood, wicker or rattan, and resin. A hot trend is “mixed media”- this is wood partnered with aluminum, a great combination.

But how do you select what type of chairs for your outdoor patio? How are you going to enjoy sun drenched days soaking up the goodness of the sun in the private backyard or patio of your own house with the perfect and most comfortable chair?

First, consider the locality where you stay, where you live and how you live..in short, your lifestyle. If you reside near the sea, wrought iron, which tends to rust easily, is probably not for you. If you want wood, there is more work to be done as wood will get a “weathered” look after some time and you will need to take care of the dullness by using a sealer such as lacquer or a paint applied periodically to restore its original shade and retard the effects from the weathering process.

One very important point is to consider what you’re using your furniture for, what look you want or feeling you’d like to evoke, and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into maintaining your chairs and benches. This is because some patio chairs will need a lot of attention as they are outdoor furniture. Suppose you have poolside chairs, they they are exposed to water splash and also the elements of the weather. If you are not prepared for changing of the cushions often which involves work and cost, you may prefer just a wooden bench, or perhaps an adirondack chair or a metal aluminium chair.

If you want to share the joys of outdoor patio living with your children, get some durable chairs such as metal or aluminium chairs and benches. They don’t tilt over easily and are stable for little children.

If you like style, then you might prefer any restored vintage metal slider or the lafuma reclining chairs, and provide years of enjoyment on your patio.

You can really enjoy the outdoor patio with just a little planning!

I long for warm weather so that I can lounge in my big cozy swing with the thick cushions and watch the kids play while I read a good book. Later we’ll grill something delicious to eat and sit around talking and having a fun time together.

Just because the area is outside doesn’t mean we have to settle for a plain old deck and backyard. Decorating an outdoor room, deck or patio is fun and not different than decorating any other part of your home.

You don’t have to spend much money to have an appealing outdoor living space. Your biggest expense may be your patio furniture and outdoor grill or barbeque.

The best way to add charm and beauty to your outdoor area is to simply choose a theme and then find affordable, quality accessories that you like. If you can find useful items as well, then you’re only adding to the benefit of outdoor living and extending your living space.

Add a beautiful table umbrella in your color scheme or maybe an outdoor rug. Tiki lighting can add atmosphere and comfort if used for keeping bugs away. For those occasional chilling evenings, a clay chiminea can be useful for added warmth and also for pest control.

Some other ideas for adding charm and beauty to your deck or patio decor is by adding lovely windchimes, decorative birdhouses, new or antique watering cans and of course don’t forget to add color throughout with potted plants in nice pots that match your theme or style.

Decorating an outdoor living space shouldn’t cost a fortune, but you should take some time to consider the amount of time you’ll spend there and your comfort level. Create an outdoor area that fits your lifestyle and tastes and that you’ll be proud to show off to friends.

There’s a massive range of outdoor patio furniture to choose from, depending on your lifestyle, your budget and the layout of your garden. For instance, if you like to entertain guests on your patio, then there are various types of dining sets available. Or for more casual relaxation, there’s a great selection of recliners and chaise lounges, just perfect for whiling away those long sunny days.

When choosing items of patio furniture, it’s worth knowing a bit about the different types of materials and their features. For example, some outdoor furniture is not built to withstand adverse weather conditions and is designed to be stored inside when not in use. Lightweight aluminum, plastic and wicker furniture falls into this category, and is generally cheaper to buy than the more solid items that can be left outside year round. These types of chairs and tables require little maintenance and are easily portable. They are often designed to be folded away or stacked, to save on storage space.

For long-lasting garden furniture that’s going to remain in a permanent position in your backyard, it’s best to look for heavy and durable materials, such as metal or wood. Wrought iron and cast aluminum patio furniture is very popular, as it can be crafted into all kinds of ornate designs, and comes in a choice of finishes. Aluminum is favored because it’s rust-proof, but wrought iron can be treated with a metal protector to prevent corrosion, and with regular attention can withstand many seasons of use. Alternatively, wooden items, including cedar, pine and teak outdoor furniture, can look stunning and with a bit of care can last for years.

There are also some accessories that you may want to consider for your outdoor furniture. To provide protection from the elements, weather-proof patio furniture covers are ideal. These are durable vinyl or PVC coverings that can be fitted over individual items or over whole sets. They are effective at preventing wear and tear from rain, wind, snow and sunlight. A cover is also useful for keeping your chairs free from dust and insects. Other accessories include specially made patio furniture cushions, which come in all shapes and sizes. These not only provide added comfort, but can add a splash of color to your patio area.

Patio furniture not only enhances the appeal of your backyard, it can provide loads of enjoyment for outdoor living for many seasons to come.

Unique Gift Wrapping Ideas

Have you been using the same ol’ holiday gift wrapping paper for years and are ready for something new? If you take the time to create your own wrapping paper is it a really great way to show someone that you really took the time to make their present special.

Some great items for creating gift wrap are: scissors; ribbons; glue; glitter; small Christmas balls and rubber stamps

Tissue Paper:

Choose the color you’d like to wrap your gift up in and wrap it up in tissue paper. You can use a ribbon of a similar or matching color or combine different colors of ribbons and tie them around it.

Tin Foil:

Get really creative and wrap a gift with tin foil. After you’ve wrapped the present you can glue a gift card with a poem; rhyme; sentiment or picture to the middle of the gift to add an extra special touch for the person you are giving it to.

Paper bags:

Most people have some paper bags at home. If you do, creating adorable wrapping paper is easy and affordable! This is a great activity with the kids and you can use many of their arts and crafts supplies to spice up the bag. Use markers, paints, crayons, glitter, rubber stamps and whatever else you can think of to add personalize the gift bag for the recipient.

Personalized wrapping paper:

Take printed photos of the recipient and print them on your computer, then glue them to the gift. You can cover the whole gift package with pictures or add just one or two for an added touch.

Cellophane:

Another popular idea is to use colored cellophane as wrapping paper. There are so many things you can do to wrap a gift in cellophane. For example, a popular idea is to take homemade cookies on a plate and warp them up with cellophane and a ribbon. Candies in a mug wrapped with cellophane is another popular gift.

Make a curly cue bow:

Open your scissors up so that you have one blade to work with. After you have tied your ribbon onto the gift by simply using a knot or bow, place the blade at the bottom of the bow where there is extra ribbon and press firmly with your thumb on the inside of the ribbon and place your index finger on the blade on the outer side of the ribbon. Then run the blade up to the top of the ribbon, now you’ve made a curly cue.

There are so many different kinds of wrapping paper you can buy, literally thousands, but there is only one creative holiday gift wrap idea, and that is one made with love and care.

Decorating Your Yard For Christmastime

Christmas holiday time is a great time to drive around the neighbourhood to look at the enchanting homes. <ins><ins></ins></ins>As you see the decorations you get inspired to get creative and decorate your own yard.

Here are some get ideas for decorating the yard for Christmas:

Of course the tried and true outside decoration is to run Christmas lights around the eaves and sides of your house, and along the outer edges of your windows. Consider placing a nice wicker basket full of Christmas balls (plastic ones if you have small children) on your front porch. Take garland and wrap it around or all over your mailbox also. Of course, if you have a large tree on your front yard you can decorate it with lights, and even add ornaments and garland too. Life sized Santa or Snowmen add a wonderful touch to your front yard if you have the room. You can also put up an animated Santa that has a sensor and will sing greetings like “Merry Christmas” as people go by.

Poinsettias on each step next to the railing of your stairs will add great holiday decor on the outside. See if you can find yourself a large boot belong to Santa and fill it with gifts and place on the front lawn. Any yard will be light up nicely by a large Merry Christmas sign if you have one.

If there’s not much chance it will be a white Christmas then spray the outside window pans of your home with snow. A Santa and reindeer would look great on any front lawn, but if you can’t afford the traditional one you could buy or make your own sleigh and then fill it right to the top with empty wrapped presents. No Christmas scene is complete without the Nativity Scene, be sure to choose a special place for this.

Decorating your yard for Christmas can be lots of fun and a great time to have special family time. Make a plan, get together and draw up what you need to do and where everything will go on your front yard. When you’re finished, stand back and admire your hard work and don’t be surprised if a few neighbours slow down to have a look at your decorations, too.
